Kōnomine Shrine

A beautiful Shintō Shrine with a sacred rock formation above Kōnomine-ji Temple

Kōnomine Shrine

From the Daishi Hall of Kōnomine-ji Temple, a path leads up to beautiful Shintō shrine in the woods. It stands on an impressive stone platform accessed by steep steps. The main hall of the shrine looms above the steps. Beautifully carved dragons and lion dogs adorn the roof gable pillars.

Up the path to the right of the shrine building is a huge rock called Tōmyō-gan (Lightning Rock). The name comes from the belief that the rock shines as a harbinger of difficulties and unusual events. It was said to have lit up before the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, the Great Kantō Earthquake, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Pacific War.

This mountain is a good illustration of the history of religion in Shikoku. A rock formation becomes the object of veneration. Then a Shintō shrine is built nearby. Subsequently, a Buddhist temple is built. Buddhist legends then incorporate the existing spiritual material. The temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage are found near rock formations that have been venerated since ancient times.

Above the shrine on the hilltop is the Sky and Sea View Park whose name alludes to Kūkai, founder of the pilgrimage.
