Temple 42, Butsumoku-ji
Butsumoku-ji, the Temple of the Buddha’s Tree, is temple No. 42 on the Shikoku pilgrimage or Henro. The temple is located in the countryside between Uwajima and Seiyo, in Ehime Prefecture. The temple buildings are interesting mixture of architectural styles, including an unusual thatched bell tower. There are many attractive trees within the temple precincts.
The temple was founded by Kūkai, who carved the votive statue. Since an old farmer allowed Kūkai to ride his ox, the temple is associated with animals. There’s a mausoleum of domestic animals and people visit here to pray for their pets.
