Ōmishima Island

Island of artistic and religious significance in the Seto Inland Sea, and last major island on the Ehime side of the Shimanami Kaidō.

Ōmishima Island

Ōmishima is an artistically and religiously significant island in the Seto Inland Sea, and the last major island on the Ehime side of the Shimanami Kaidō. It was the location for a scene in The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman.

Must-see places on Ōmishima include Ōyamazumi Shrine and the Ōmishima Museum of Art, the Tokoro Museum, the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture, and the Ken Iwata Mother and Child Museum. Tatara Observation Deck offers a 360-degree view of the nearby bridge and islands.

There’s some good hiking on Ōmishima, including an easy route up to Irihi Falls, a small but attractive waterfall. There are also hikes up to the rugged peaks above. Utena Beach is a very picturesque spot for swimming.

Ōmishima is quite mountainous, and if you want to see the island on a bicycle, expect to sweat as you ride over the passes in the middle of the island, and around the undulating coastline.
