Regional Focus: Dōgo

Dōgo is a part of Matsuyama, known for Dōgo Onsen and its pretty Honkan bathhouse. Until relatively recently, Dōgo was an entirely separate area from Matsuyama, but development has filled in the space between them. This charming little self-contained area has the air of a traditional Japanese resort, with visitors strolling around in colourful yukata robes.

The Honkan is surrounded by ryokan hotels offering various levels of luxury. All have baths fed by the same hot spring. Beside the Honkan, there are two other large public baths, Tsubaki no Yu and Asuka no Yu. There are several places where you can enjoy a free and relaxing foot bath. Trams and the Botchan Train provide convenient transport to the centre of Matsuyama, making Dōgo a convenient base for a stay.

Besides the baths, Dōgo has a large park that used to be the site of a castle. The large hill in the middle offers a panoramic view of Matsuyama and the mountains around it. There are several Shintō shrines such as the distinctive red Isaniwa Shrine, and Matsuyama Shrine, and Buddhist temples including Hōgon-ji and Enman-ji with its big Buddha.

Dōgo Arcade is packed with attractive shops offering high-quality souvenirs and snacks. There are also numerous cafés in the arcade, as well as a wide range of restaurants. Sake lovers will enjoy a visit to Minakuchi Brewery, which also makes Dōgo Beer.

Museums include the Giyaman Glass Museum featuring rare and elegant glassware, and the Shiki Museum dedicated to haiku poet Masaoka Shiki.
