customer’s name：AnonymousOn Shikoku Island, Iya Valley is recognized for two significant factors – the first being how its precipitously steep walls effectively determined the success of agriculture grown here – with microclimates on opposite sides of the valley supporting different crops; the second factor is the legendary safe haven provided to defeated Heike samurai warriors towards the end of the Genpei War (1180-1185). Thirteen strategically-placed vine bridges enabled access across deep gorges to remote areas of refuge. These woven bridges were an effective defense, as they could be quickly chopped and dropped to prevent enemy forces from crossing the Iya River.
Vegetable growth today remains limited by Iya’s vertical topography, and modern access along constricted winding roadways is an eye-popping reminder of the perilous challenges of the past.
In Iya, we stayed at a meticulously crafted, century-old domicile that consists of two spacious, traditional, thatch-roof structures, complete with kamidana, hearth, and vegetable cellar. Our lodging’s isolation provided solitude, peace, and wonderful panoramic mountain views, harkening to epic tales of sanctuary from days gone by.
Accompanied by guides for local sites, here we wave energetically to our driver high above.
