Mount Ishizuchi Tour: Flowing from Sea to Summit

Overview

Flow up and down the craggy slopes of western Shikoku’s sacred Mount Ishizuchi, tracing its influence on spirituality, craft, and cuisine through firsthand experiences. Over six days this journey climbs from the Seto Inland Sea to the top of Mt. Ishizuchi, then down to the Pacific through western Shikoku’s varied and powerful landscape.

You’ll start out cycling the Shimanami Kaidō, scale western Japan’s highest peak with mountain ascetics, and follow the glassy waters of Kōchi’s rivers toward the Pacific Ocean. Along the way you’ll connect with locals over traditions they hold dear—you’ll meditate with Buddhist and Shintō priests, try your hand at heritage crafts, and indulge in some of Japan’s best food, rooted in the island’s changing seasons and locals’ culinary expertise.

An expert guide-interpreter accompanies you for the duration of the tour to provide context and facilitate conversations. A private car and professional driver mean you can reach even out-of-the-way destinations with complete privacy and peace of mind.
