This tour takes you from Hiroshima Prefecture on Honshū to Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, crossing the islands and bridges of the Shimanami Kaidō over the Seto Inland Sea by bicycle. You take time enjoy the ride and explore the best of the islands, including major shrines, view points, and pirate heritage. You also take a fast boat out into the racing currents and whirlpools of the Inland Sea.

You stay in a variety of accommodation, including a stylish cycling-oriented hotel and an island glamping site. You send your luggage ahead and travel light.

Who is this tour for?

This tour is for those who like to travel independently without a guide, using GPS navigation. You need to be fit enough to cycle most of the day.

Day 1 :

The tour starts in Onomichi. You stroll around this fascinating town, with its hillside alleys lined with ancient temples, and its nostalgic arcades. You stay at Onomichi U2, a dockside warehouse converted into a chic boutique hotel for cyclists. Dinner (not included), is at the hotel or a local restaurant of your choice.

Day 2 :

You send your luggage on to tonight's accommodation. After breakfast (included), you pick up your bike and cycle the first half of the Shimanami Kaidō, visiting the Innoshima Suigun Castle to learn about the region's pirate heritage. You also stop at Ōyamazumi Shrine with its ancient trees and its huge collection of antique weapons and armour. You stay the night at Wakka, a glampsite on Ōmishima Island. Dinner (included) is served at the accommodation.

Day 3 :

You send your luggage on to Imabari. After breakfast (included), you cycle the second half of the Shimanami Kaidō. On Ōshima Island, you take a fast boat out into the racing currents and whirlpools of the Inland Sea, and cycle up to Mt. Kirō to admire the amazing view of the Kurushima Straits Bridge and Imabari city. Then you cycle to Imabari Station where you pick up your luggage and take the train to Matsuyama. You stay at Dōgo Hakuro, a modern hotel with hot spring baths. Dinner (not included), is at a local restaurant.

Day 4 :

After breakfast (included), you explore Dōgo and take the tram to Matsuyama Castle. Then you travel from Matsuyama to your next destination.

What happens if it rains?

Please prepare adequate rain wear for cycling in the rain.

What if I get a puncture?

We’ll give you a number to call if you need some sort of rescue. Fees apply if you use this service.

Are there vegetarian options?

Not really. Japanese cooking is based on fish stock, and the Japanese love their fish and meat. On this tour, you stay in traditional Japanese accommodation that is proud of its cuisine, especially the fish. For breakfast and dinner, it is possible to ask for ‘largely’ vegetarian food, but no guarantees are offered. You can generally find vegetarian options for lunch, but with limited choice.
