Temple 79, Tennō-ji
Tenno-ji is temple No. 79 on the Shikoku pilgrimage.
Legend has it that the temple was founded to commemorate the killing of a fish monster on the site.
Its name derives from the fact that Sutoku Tenno (Emperor Sutoku) lay in state here after he died or was assassinated in 1156, following banishment from Kyoto after his attempted coup against his brother, who was then in power. His body was washed in the spring in the temple grounds. Temple No. 81 is the site of his mausoleum.
